My challenge working with my manager: Why is it so difficult to focus on what really matters?

My manager...
- was very interested when I talked to him about the concept
- was too busy to read the guide
- encouraged me to try PA first by myself and then demonstrate him how I get along with it
- became and still is my weekly "celebrate & choose" partner (I use trello)
- as I used Trelllo in the "celebrate & choose" meeting, he was fascinated about the possibilities of trello. A physical board was not an option for him.
- fully motivated and enthusiastic he started after a holiday with his own personal agility trello board
- gave me the right to watch his trello board
- didn’t move his cards...I noticed that they got older and older

I asked him if he was not interested in PA any more.
He replied „No no, it's not that. I still like the idea, but my agenda does not allow me to apply it properly…"

As a convinced PA user I'd like to let him experience the same power of what really matters, but I don't know how to continue with him...

Hi Rene,

are You familiar with the advice, Warren Buffet gave his personal Pilot (- as it was reported to me).

  • Make a list of "Your" 25 top prioritized topics
  • mark the top5 from them and make a "to-do-[bucket]list" from them.
  • make a "NOT-to-do-list" from the other 20 topics and avoid working on them by any means

This might help "Your manager" to get along with keeping focus on whatever matters to him.

You might also refer to a German post about that topic:

Ask your clarifying questions here! The goal is to understand the problem (before we start offering solutions)

Maybe you can ask him: Are you happy with how things are going right now? Is there something you want to change?

What's his north star? Is that reflecting in the board

Hi Robinson

That’s what I’m planning to do. Away from my initial idea “to convince him of PA” without knowing his exact pain I want to find out what is it that still interests him about PA; or in other words what does he expect to change to the better when restarting PA.

thanks for taking me some steps back 😉

Hi Albert

At first sight I would say no it’s not reflected on the board. But I rather ask him this question and see how he answers to that. Thanks for your input.

Hi Vipul

Thanks for your suggestion 👍

These could be the next steps if he really wants to change something (see also Robinson’s post). If I’m the right person to discuss this with him is still something we have to ask ourselves.

Thank you Alexander for this interesting German post! I’m curious what he will say about it.

Welcome.
if he has no Northstar, he lives in a comfortable zone. most times it is
difficult for us to come out of that comfortable zone.
If we can help him to find his passion that he need to achieve, it would be
easy for us to recommend the manager to use the board and track it.

All the best

Thanks,
